Gogo Business Aviation's
Network Management Policy
The practice of network management is commonly implemented by data network providers including the major wireless carriers and cable providers. Gogo Business Aviation also uses network management and has done so for several years. Gogo Business Aviation’s network management policy is designed to manage the network in a way that ensures a good experience for all customers on the best air-to-ground network in North America.
Network management is designed to give optimal performance to everyone who accesses the network and to reduce the negative effects on network performance that can be caused when high-data consumption activities (such as streaming video) are conducted for extended periods of time. Simply put, it is the best way to equitably manage the finite resources of available bandwidth.
In December, 2017, Gogo completed an upgrade to some of our network systems that allowed us to improve and revise our network management policy to ensure a better experience for all customers. With the new network systems, Gogo has more flexibility in setting policy in terms of application types, volume limits and pacing controls.
Under the new policy, each device on an ATG4000/ATG5000 WLAN can use 150 MB per hour before the network management policy is activated (ATG1000/ATG 2000 limit is 50 MB per hour per device).
This policy measures data consumption and adjusts speeds downward on a per-hour, per-device basis. That means if someone begins a data session and reaches the data threshold for a device before an hour has passed, a reduction in network speed will be implemented on that device for the remainder of that hour-long session. After that hour concludes, the speed reduction will be lifted and maximum network capabilities can again be realized.
Please note that network throughput speed will remain at the maximum level available until the allowed data consumption threshold of 150 MB per device, for ATG4000/5000 systems, per hour is reached. It is only after that threshold is reached that customers may experience reduced throughput speed on that device only. Even when subjected to reduced speeds, customers can accomplish many of the same tasks they have always enjoyed.
One of the differences with the new policy is that streaming is blocked for non-streaming plans (all 3G plans and non-streaming L5 plans). Streaming video and audio consume the highest volumes of data and the bandwidth requirements of these activities are not supported with our 3G technology. In the past, although there were times that streaming was possible on the 3G network, it was not a reliable experience, and it negatively affected the online experience for everyone else on the aircraft, even if only one device was trying to stream.
This policy is subject to change to better meet customer demands as usage trends evolve. Please direct additional questions you may have about Gogo’s Network Management Policy to technical support at 303-301-3278 or bacustomerservice@gogoair.com.
